SPEKTACULATIUS - Christmas Blues
Remixed by Elijah Mobley
ORIGINAL MIX

This song caught my ears for two main reasons: A - because it reminded me of the Beatles, and B - because it was about Christmas. I loved the idea of remixing something like this, though at first at had no idea how I would execute. I simply listened over and over to this should-be classic until the idea finally sparked in my brain. One thing I must say, however, is I do not like how they recorded this song. The mix sounds okay as a whole, but some of the individual tracks were very hard to work with. Deciding to completely remix this song wasn't just a creative decision, it was also to avoid problems later down the road when mixing.
REMIX

This remix came along so nicely I myself was taken aback a bit when it all came together. Each addition was specific. I wanted to make sure the vocals stood out more than they did in the original mix and to completely change the groove and feel of the original song entirely. I placed a lot of my personality in the production but stayed true to the blues feel of the original mix. I love the twelve bar blues, so changing that in this mix would have been ludicrous. The rest of the elements form a reggae/hip-hop/pop vibe that I have come to very much appreciate.
THE ELEMENTS
EXCERPT FROM ORIGINAL

NE W GROOVE CHANGE
My first variation focused on changing up the bass, drum, and percussion to give the song a new groove. I kept the vocals, electric guitar, and sax from the original mix because they were the elements I felt reserved most of the original character and feel.
NEW BASS
NEW DRUMS AND PERKS
NEW ADDED SOUND DESIGN
My next variation focused on adding sound design elements with synthesizers and virtual instruments on logic. In this intro, I started by creating a simple chord progression using an electric piano. I then added and ambient arp using the Alchemy synth. There are more sound design elements later in the song as well; one of my favorites being a bell sound I used to play a melody during the drum solo. Hear it in the full remix at the top of the page!
SOUND DESIGN ELEMENTS
NEW ADDED LIVE UKULELE
My final variation before getting to the final mix stage was centered on only one instrument: a toy ukulele with a broken string. I used it to play a melody along with the music using the Am scale. The very beginning of the remix features some melodic noodling that I think sound really cool. Hear it in the full remix at the top of the page!
